2 July 2017 — 12.30pm
John Bell (narrator) and Simon Tedeschi (pianist) perform “Enoch Arden”
A tale of shipwreck, heartbreak and redemption. Founder of Bell Shakespeare, John Bell, and internationally acclaimed pianist,  Simon Tedeschi – two of Australia’s great storytellers – bring their unique performance of Enoch Arden to the Four Winds Windsong Pavilion. This epic melodrama, composed by Richard Strauss to the words of Lord Tennyson’s 1864 poem, Enoch Arden, will be performed in words and music. “A tragic, tempestuous, romatic tale accompanied by the music of a genius. Half chamber music, half theatre”, says Simon Tedeschi.
The historic and artistic value of pairing poetry with classical music is something that both performers are eager to share with audiences as they tour around Australia. “Audiences can expect a moving and dramatic talk of shipwreck, loss and redemption — very satisfying theatre” says John Bell.

19 November — 1.00pm

Four Winds Radical Voice Series: Chaos Theory & The Arts

Thursday 6th July, 2017

Why are we always trying to force the arts and artists into boxes? Like Dr Who’s Tardis they are bigger on the inside than on the outside. That’s the excitement and wonder of the journey and we should all fight to preserve it. Society also tries to trap the arts into business-speak and business plans. They have only eroded the wild and the whimsical and the unpredictable and have made us duller in the process. Producer and arts historian, Dr Justin Macdonnell explores these questions and asks if it might be time to apply a little chaos theory to the scene.

For over forty years Dr Justin Macdonnell has been a leading producer and promoter of the arts and artists of Australia and throughout the world. In a varied career he has been General Manager of the State Opera of SA, Executive Director of the Confederation of Australia Professional Performing Arts, Director of the National Opera of New Zealand, Programming Director of the Sydney Festival, Executive Director of the Australian Institute of Arts Management and Artistic Director of the Miami Performing Arts Centre in the US. He has produced dozens of works in music, theatre, dance and physical theatre and toured them around the globe and undertaken scores of consultancies for public and private arts agencies here and abroad. He is now Executive Director of the Anzarts Institute, a consulting agency and think tank for the cultural industries in Australia and New Zealand.
