Tracey Moffatt – BVRG

Friday 19th May, 2017 - Saturday 8th July, 2017

TRACEY MOFFATT. 1989. Something More #1.

TRACEY MOFFATT. 1989. Something More #1.

Tracey Moffatt is one of Australia’s most successful international artists, known for her film, photography and video works. Drawing on cinema, television and the media, her art is equally inspired by popular culture, recollections from her childhood and art history.

Moffatt began her career as an experimental filmmaker and producer of music videos, and she continued making films after establishing herself as a photographer. She first came to prominence in the Australian art world with her series Something More. Commissioned in 1989 by the Albury Regional Art Gallery and shot in the Link Studios in Wodonga, the series set the tone and themes for much of Moffatt’s later work. This sequence of nine images is a loose narrative, shot like film stills, in which the artist references the possible meanings of the title and its hint of sadomasochism.

This exhibition features the entire Something More series as well as a selection of photographs from Moffatt’s Scarred for Life and Some Lads series.

Merimbula Jazz Festival

The Merimbula Jazz Festival is an annual music festival held in Merimbula over the June Long Weekend every year.

The Merimbula Jazz Festival has been held every June long weekend since 1981 involving approximately 150 bands, 700 musicians playing all styles of jazz from trad, ragtime, big bands, swing, mainstream, modern and funk. In a nutshell, the Merimbula Jazz Festival is the ‘Festival for Musicians’. Great Musos and their jazz music create the memorable festival environment each year. The format and organisation set down by the festival’s founding Committee has worked well for over 30 years, so, as the old saying still goes “If it ain’t broke don’t fix it.” As such, you have a festival which, at its roots, is all about community and having fun!

The festival includes a Street Parade, the popular Jazz Quest for the under 25’s and Jazz Party with performances across 4 days and 6 venues.

The Howard Hinton Collection, in the sheer breadth of its cover of Australian art from the 1880s to the 1940s, is the only collection of its kind in regional Australia.

Howard Hinton, an avid collector of art and visitor of artists’ studios, developed his collection for the purpose of encouraging artists, educating students, and for the benefit and enjoyment of the public.  He first donated works to the Armidale Teachers College in 1929 and, by the time of his death in 1948, had given away over 1,200 works.

The Collection reflects Hinton’s early love for Victorian travel paintings as well as respect for the conventions of Australian landscape art.  The Lindsay family is strongly represented as is Streeton, Roberts, Gruner, Hilder, Murch and Feint.

Eden Whale Festival

Friday 3rd November, 2017 - Sunday 5th November, 2017

EdenWhaleFestIt’s an oceanic migration like no other, and Eden has been an important part of it for centuries.

See how the townspeople celebrate it today with art, street theatre and music while we feast on the harvest from sea and soil.

Held in and around the port, the festival embraces our maritime and bush heritage and celebrates it with a huge party on the Saturday night.

It’s the most unique whale watching experience the nation has to offer, and one that Australian Geographic ranked number one for whale watching destinations in Australia in 2014.

The whales can be seen in large numbers in the town’s stunning Twofold Bay, whether you are in a boat or on shore with a picnic of local produce.

There’s a spectacular street parade, vibrant markets showcasing and selling the work of local artisans, great local food and wine, educational marine displays and presentations, quality children’s entertainment, live music and – of course – the best whale watching experience in Australia.
